When an adolscent or teen is struggling with an eating disorder their pain is something we can manage. It is not uncommon for those with an eating disorder to struggle with other mental health diagnoses as well. The path of this connection is unclear and depends on each individual. Statistics reveal that eating disorders may develop as maladaptive coping skills for mental health diagnoses. Conversely, it can also be understood that mental health issues may also develop because of eating disorder behaviors. It is imperative that the relationship between eating disorders and co-occurring mental health issues are equally addressed, as key to effective diagnosis and treatment of the individual.
